SYSTEM TYPES

Grid Tie Systems

Grid-tie systems are designed to save you money.  It combines the solar output power with Eskom input power to reduce the usage from Eskom. Grid Tie Systems do not offer any backup power in case of load shedding.   Eskom off = Solar system off

Systems such as these are ideal for offices, shops, malls or large complexes, mines, hospitals, butcheries or wherever occupancy mostly occurs during the day.  Homes with a pool and large daily consumption can also benefit from these systems.

These systems are the most cost-effective to install and your return on investment could be 2-4 years depending on what you currently pay per kwh (unit) on your electricity bill.

These systems can export to the grid if it’s allowed by your local authority.     If it is not allowed to feed power back to the grid then a solar block can be installed to prevent export. Scalable systems, 1.2kwp up to 100,000kwp…. You don’t have to install a large system, start small and expand the system over time.

Hybrid systems (Off-grid with grid/generator backup )

Hybrid systems are designed for applications where there is grid power available for backup.    These can be used with a generator or wind turbine as an extra 2nd  backup to support the battery bank if load shedding or if an unstable grid is a big problem.

  • These systems can not export (feedback) to the grid.
  • Some systems has two load outputs, one for essential loads and other for non-essential loads. When it is load-shedding the non-essential loads will disconnect and inverter will supply only essential loads.

These systems work with specially designed lead acid 2v deep cycle batteries for long-term cycling or can work with GEL or AGM 12v batteries that have a shorter lifespan.   Lead acid 2v cells last 10-15 years depending on D.O.D and GEL 12v cells last 4-7 years depending on D.O.D.    If you are in it for the long term then GEL or AMG is not recommended.

These systems are mostly designed on the kwh usage of the load requirements.    When you are over the kwh limit that the system was designed for then the system will automatically switch back to grid mode for the grid to supply the load or if it is set up it will charge batteries from the grid.

Certain grid hybrid Inverters can supply load from the grid and Pv at the same time.

Return on investment would be +-8-10 years.
Scaling these systems is not a problem, smallest 1kwh up to 1000kwh….

Off-Grid systems

Off-Grid systems are designed for remote applications where no grid power is available.

These are mostly used with a generator or a wind turbine as a backup to support the battery bank if the weather is bad.

These systems work with specially designed lead acid 2v deep cycle batteries for long-term cycling.  AMG & GEL batteries are not recommended.

These batteries last normally 10-15 years depending on depth of discharge (D.O.D).

These systems are mostly over-designed for longer backup that makes it more expensive.   Return on investment could be +-8-10 years.

Scaling these systems is not a problem, smallest 1kwh up to 1000kwh….

Full Hybrid systems (Off-grid & Grid Tie with grid/generator backup &  can Grid-tie)

Full Hybrid systems are designed for applications where there is grid power available for backup.    These can be used with a generator or wind turbine as an extra 2nd  backup to support the battery bank if load shedding or if an unstable grid is a big problem.

These systems can export (feedback) to the grid if it’s allowed by your local authority and if it is not allowed then a solar block can be installed to prevent export.

  • Island function allows the system to work off-grid as well.
  • System has two load outputs, one for essential loads and other for non-essential loads. When it is load-shedding the non-essential loads will disconnect and inverter will supply only essential loads.

These systems work with specially designed lead acid 2v deep cycle batteries for long term cycling or can work with GEL or AGM 12v batteries that have a shorter lifespan.   Lead acid 2v cells last 10-15 years depending on D.O.D and GEL 12v cells last 4-7 years depending on D.O.D.    If you are in it for the long term then GEL or AMG is not recommended.

Backup Power / UPS ( Use grid power as charger   or   Pv – optional )

These systems are usually designed where the main purpose is backup power.   These systems are standby systems and do not offer cost saving on electricity.

When the grid is not available, backup is given to critical components only and serves mainly as one large UPS supplying essential loads in the case of a power failure.

The backup time depends on the battery design.   More items on the load mean the more batteries you need.      The autonomy in the batteries may last 6-48 hours depends on design.

Load kwh (units) = kwh (units) available in batteries.
